When taking a photograph of evidence (fingerprints, handprints, objects that are less than 12-inches long), it is useful to include a ruler or scale with the subject photographed. Forensic rulers are used in evidence collection and can be purchased from commercial forensic suppliers. Here is a .pdf on the internet that was designed and licensed for non-commercial purposes that can be downloaded and printed. Then the printed image can be laminated and used when you encounter evidence that you want to photograph.
